The mint master and engravers used a unique combination of different finishing techniques to achieve this numismatic masterpiece.
Interesting fact: Painted in 1889, Starry night is a depiction of the pre-dawn sky from the east facing window of his asylum room Saint-Remy-de-Provence. Following an emotional breakdown the prior year, Van Gogh self admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole lunatic asylum where he continued to produce some of his best known works.
Artists Backstory:
Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. He produced about approximately 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits employing bold colors and dramatic brushwork. Not commercially successful in his career, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, which eventually led to his suicide at age thirty-seven.
