Ares was the Olympian god of war, battlelust, courage and civil order. In Ancient Greek artworks he was depicted as either a mature, bearded warrior armed for battle, or a nude, beardless youth with a helm and spear. Ares’ main attribute was a peaked warrior’s helm often accompanied by a shield and sometimes a sheathed sword. Although his shield was often decorated with an emblem of some sort, ancient artists simply used a generic one drawn from their standard repertoire rather than something specific to the god.
