2020 Niue 1 Ounce Dinosaurs - Triceratops Colored Antique Finish Silver Proof Coin
- In Stock - Now Shipping
The tremendous Triceratops is part of the exciting Dinosaur Coin Collection struck in 1 ounce of .999 pure silver. With its rock-hard horns, shield-like head plate, and massive torso it must have been an intimidating presence - but this giant was in fact a herbivore, preying only on the vegetation of western North America.
The coin has been antique finished as part of the overall design aesthetic. The reverse shows a dramatic, coloured representation of the imposing Triceratops in a confrontation with two raptors. The raptors and the prehistoric landscape background are skilfully engraved for contrast. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is legal tender in Niue.
The numbered Certificate of Authenticity fits neatly inside a quality coin case. This, in turn, is placed inside a themed outer box featuring an image of this imposing dinosaur against a background of rock.
A limited mintage of 2,000 coins means this will be a unique addition to anyone’s dinosaur or coin collection.
Bearing a large bony frill and three horns on the skull, and its large four-legged body possessing similarities with the modern rhinoceros, Triceratops is one of the most recognizable of all dinosaurs and the best-known ceratopsid. It was also one of the largest, up to nine metres long and twelve tonnes in weight. It shared the landscape with and was probably preyed upon by Tyrannosaurus, though it is less certain that the two did battle in the fanciful manner often depicted in museum displays and popular images. The functions of the frills and three distinctive facial horns on its head have long inspired debate. Traditionally, these have been viewed as defensive weapons against predators. More recent interpretations find it probable that these features were primarily used in species identification, courtship and dominance display, much like the antlers and horns of modern ungulates.
