Issued as part of the impressive series of silver coins containing authentic meteorite pieces, this latest 2013 coin by the Cook Islands is dedicated to the Chelyabinsk meteorite. Struck in .925 silver in proof quality, the coin has an extremely limited mintage of only 2,500 pieces worldwide.

The obverse of the coin traditionally displays the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II.  It is surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin and its issuing country.

The special thing about the coin is the authentic piece of the Chelyabinsk meteorite inlaid on the reverse. Considered the largest meteor since 1908, it exploded on February 15th, 2013 over Chelyabinsk in the Russian Ural region. A piece of the meteorite hit Lake Tschebarkul not far from Chelyabinsk tearing a hole of about six meters in diameter in the ice sheet.
