The composition plays on two moments:

In the foreground, Perseus—caught between sleep and wakefulness—prepares to face whatever fate has in store for him.

Then, focusing one’s gaze on the central opening, one glimpses the second part of the myth: Perseus, riding Pegasus and bearing Medusa’s head, frees Andromeda from the sea monster.

Medusa cannot be looked at directly; her eyes have the power to turn everything that meets her gaze to stone. For this reason, by placing a curved mirror at the centre of the composition, you will see Medusa’s face revealed – reflected rather than directly – just as in the stratagem adopted by Perseus to neutralise her devastating power.
