Today, the phrase describes any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a hidden danger inside.

The Mythological Story according to epic poetry, including Virgil’s Aeneid, the Greeks constructed a massive wooden horse and hid a select group of elite warriors inside, including Odysseus. The rest of the Greek fleet pretended to give up and sailed away to the nearby island of Tenedos.
