A legal tender issue of Cameroon and the latest issue in the Divine Beauty series, we present Themis, the ancient Greek Titan goddess and personification of natural order and justice.
Cold mountain air moves through the stone colonnades of Delphi. Footsteps fade across the ancient floor as a mortal stands before Themis, seeking an answer to a question no one else can answer. The sanctuary falls silent. She listens.
For Themis, what has happened and what is yet to come are never separate. Every choice sets something in motion. Every broken balance carries a consequence. And what remains hidden from others may already be part of her answer.
Before Justice was blind, Themis could see the future.
A Titaness of divine order, law and foresight, Themis represented the balance that holds the world together. Her scales were not simply a measure of right and wrong. They reflected the delicate relationship between choice and consequence, action and destiny, order and chaos.
Her wisdom was not limited to judgment. Themis was among those who knew what lay beyond the present. At Delphi, she was connected with the ancient prophetic tradition, holding knowledge of what was yet to unfold.
It was this understanding of divine order that would later echo in the figure of Justice. Themis and Justice are not the same goddess, yet the ancient ideas embodied by Themis helped shape the symbolism that would come to represent justice for generations to come.
Scales to weigh. A sword to act. A blindfold to leave judgment untouched by what the eyes might see. And the blue sapphires set into both become a quiet symbol of the qualities that make such judgment possible — truth, wisdom and integrity.
