Saint Jude and the final issue in this remarkable series from Cameroon, was also known as Jude Thaddeus, one of the twelve Apostles handpicked by Jesus Christ. Often confused with Judas Iscariot – the traitor, Apostle St. Jude humbly endured centuries of mistaken identity. Yet his legacy has emerged, shining with a radiant strength rooted in hope, endurance and miraculous intercession.

Though little is mentioned of him in the Gospels, Jude’s actions after Christ’s resurrection speak volumes. He journeyed far beyond familiar borders – to Mesopotamia, Libya, Syria and Armenia – carrying the message of salvation to those who had never heard it. Legend holds that his mere presence calmed storms and healed afflictions.

His most enduring contribution is the New Testament Epistle of Jude, a short but fierce letter warning against false teachings and urging the faithful to remain resolute. It is in this text that Jude’s spirit reveals itself: protective, uncompromising and filled with divine purpose.

But it is in death, not life, that Jude became known as the Patron Saint of Lost Causes. According to tradition, he was martyred by axe, a brutal end that he met with calm conviction.

Devotees believe that because he was long overlooked due to his name, he now chooses to help those overlooked by the world — those who have no one else to turn to. For centuries, prayers to St. Jude have carried the desperate pleas of the faithful: a child’s cry for healing, a parent’s plea for hope, the silent prayer of someone who’s tried everything and has nowhere left to turn. And again and again, miracles follow.

The design:

The Axe on the reverse is not a symbol of violence, but of conviction. It speaks to the price Jude paid for preaching the truth in dangerous lands while the book he holds signifies his epistle, a lasting voice of encouragement to the embattled faithful.

The ship on the obverse is his missionary vessel — symbolizing how far he went, both in geography and in spirit, to carry the Gospel to the forgotten corners of the world while the rope winding down the cross is both a symbol of bondage and connection to his unbreakable tie to those who pray to him.
