Colombian Nobel laureate Gabriel García Marquez mentioned a grand shipwreck of the San Jose galleon in his famous “Love in the Time of Cholera” novel. He wrote about “a cargo of precious metals and stones valued at five hundred million pesos in the currency of the day”.
It was perhaps the richest cargo ever lost at sea.
