MDM Deutsche Munz at Art in Coins

In 1903, the Wright Brothers achieved the first powered, sustained, and controlled airplane flight. It was a miracle of modern science and ingenuity – just like this five-ounce silver coin dedicated to their achievement.

This incredible numismatic piece contains five ounces of .999 pure silver struck in a proof quality finish.  The true ingenuity however, lies in the Mother of Pearl inlay. It comes from the Pinctada Maxima, the largest natural growth pearl oyster. It takes up to 12 weeks to select the most beautiful shells for the series, after which the shells are sized and then crafted into their designs using ultrasonic waves. When you look upon the image of the Wright brothers and their plane, you’re looking at a design that took up to five weeks to accomplish. Then comes the coloring – which required another five weeks in a special solution to achieve just the right shades.

The Wright Brothers coin is legal tender in the Solomon Islands, a self-governing nation located in in the South Pacific made up of nation of hundreds of islands.  It is also manufactured in gorgeous proof quality, meaning it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
