Meet the Artist – Orietta Rossi

Biography

Orietta Rossi was born in Rome in 1968 and has always lived and worked in the capital.  Her training began in 1987 at the three-year School of Medal Art at the Mint of Rome, where she obtained her first professional qualification and explored various teachings and techniques (engraving, bas-relief and full-relief modeling, embossing, enameling, design and drawing, and molding).  She subsequently obtained a qualification as a Goldsmith Designer from the Regional School of Rome and then as a Goldsmith Cerista from the same Roman School.

Numerous and notable projects have been carried out, including, among others, the collaborative creation of a copy of the equestrian monument of Marcus Aurelius, commissioned by the City of Rome and currently on display in the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, and the collaborative creation of a scale copy of the Antonine Column, commissioned by the IPZS and currently on display at the ACEA headquarters in Rome. Furthermore, the impressive production of medals and coins made for the Vatican City, the FAO, and numerous other prestigious private and public clients.

From her fruitful and ongoing collaboration with other sculptors, she created important works, including the Tabernacle, the Baptist’s Door, and balustrades for the chapels of Saints Martin and Sebastian of the Swiss in the Vatican; a door in the Vatican walls; the liturgical furnishings for the chapel of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome; and, finally, the monumental work commemorating the Christian Biennial for the University of Tor Vergata (created in collaboration with Gino Giannetti); and the creation of the Pauline Door for the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (in collaboration with Professor Guido Veroi), inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI in June 2009.

Among other things, she has a dedicated passion to the design and creation of jewelry.

Alongside her professional artistic career, she also teaches drawing and modeling in wax, clay, plasticine, and plaster, as well as drawing and modeling (figure and ornamentation). Orietta has participated in numerous exhibitions and shows; her models and coins created for the Vatican City are currently on display at the Vatican Museums.

Work History

Design and execution of liturgical objects for Pope Francesco’s visit to the Holy land: a goblet for the Orthodox, a menorah for the Jews, a lamp for the Muslims, a small sculpture for the Holy Sepulcher; a pectorale for the bishops – 2014

Execution of a 1:16 scale model of the “Gloria di San Paolo” in Alba, commissioned by the Society San Paolo for their 100th anniversary – 2014.

Design and execution of a sculpture to be presented to the first prize winner at the festival “Memoria Corta”, commissioned by Municipality of Rome – 2013.

The realization of the Paolina Doorway of “St Paul Basilica outside the Walls” in cooperation with sculptor Guido Veroi. Rome – 2009.

Collaborated on the project to create a full-size copy in bronze of the ancient Roman equestrian monument of Marco Aurelio. The copy was commissioned by the city of Rome to substitute the original located in the city square, the Campidoglio – 1997.

Collaborated on the project to create four large panels in resin for the Fine Arts Ministry. The panels are on display in the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Massimo in Rome – 1999.

Collaborated on the project to create a 1:10 scale model of the Colonna Antonina. The work was commissioned by the I.P.Z.S. and is on display in the central office building of the A.C.E.A. in Rome – 1993.

Commissioned by the city of Anzio to recreate the heads and other missing parts and subsequent restoration of the statues located in the “Paradiso del Mare” complex and casino in Anzio, Italy – 2000.

Collaborated on the project to create a 1:16 scale model of the esquestrian monument of Marco Aurelio. The work was commissioned by the I.P.Z.S. – 1997.

Collaborated on various private and public restoration projects including work for the Ministry of the Air Force in Rome; for Palazzo Vidoni in Rome, (the façade); for cathedral of Campagnano (Italy) and for the casinò of Bagni di Lucca (Italy).

Creation and reproduction of plaster models, retouching of wax models, and refinishing and chasing of works cast in silver and in bronze for the I.P.Z.S..

Created oil paintings and wax models for the Franklin Mint (U.S.A.).

Collaboration with the sculptor, Gino Giannetti, on various works including the tabernacle, the door dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and the balustrade for the chapels of Saint Martin and of Saint Sebastian of the Swiss in the Vatican; a bronze door in the Vatican wall; the design and creation of the liturgical furnishings for a chapel in the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome; the design and creation of a monument for the University of Tor Vergata in Rome – 1995/2009.

Models and coins commissioned by the Vatican State are currently on display in the Nuovo Museo Filatelico e Numismatico of the Vatican Museums.

Exhibition “Percorsi d’Artisti”, at the Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale “Giuseppe Tucci”, Rome (Italy).

Exhibition “Il Mediterraneo i Luogi e la Memoria” organized by the city of Taranto (Italy) for the 100th anniversay of the port.

Exhibition “Monete e Medaglie Italiane 2300 Anni di Storia ed Arte held at Osaka (Japan).

Participated in the 9th , 10th and 11th editions of the “Biennale Dantesca di Ravenna”, Ravenna (Italy).

Participated in the International Medal Competition held by the Royal Swedish Accademy of Sciences where her work was among the ten that were selected to participate in the international congress and exhibition organized by the F.I.D.E.M. in Budapest (Hungary) in 1994.

Participated in the VIII Mostra della Medaglia e della Placchetta d’Arte”held at the Complesso Monumentale del S. Michele a Ripa in Rome during the VII settimana per i Beni Cultutali ed Ambientali.

Participated in the IX Mostra della Medaglia e della Placchetta d’Arte held in the Salone dell’Ufficio di Stato per il Turismo in Rome.

Participated in the X Mostra della Medaglia e della Placchetta d’Arte held in the Salone Sistino in the Vatican City.

Participated in the XI Mostra della Medaglia e della Placchetta d’Arte held at the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome.

Participated in an exhibition organized to celebrate the 100th anniversay of Don Bosco. Held at the Museo del Risogimento in Rome.
