Biography
Maria Anna Frisone, artist and coin designer, was born in Messina in 1976, where she graduated from the Liceo Artistico. Her itinerant frequentations in the artistic field led her to develop interests and skills in multiple fields, such as painting, sculpture, restoration and architecture, making her a complete and multifaceted artist. In 2014, she won the entrance competition to the prestigious School of the Art of the Medal, of the Italian State Mint and Mint in Rome, where she attended the three-year course, aimed at learning medallic techniques and related disciplines. At the end of which she completes her training with a two-year scholarship awarded by the same institution while 2019 entrusted her with the creation of the State Police Medal.
In the same period comes her first international recognition, with third place in the International Coin Design Competition, of the Japan Mint, with the project ‘Once upon a time…’, dedicated to the importance of the role of imagination in the development of a complete personality, especially in children.
In 2021, she won first prize in the same competition of the Japan Mint, with the project ‘Humanity in Nature’, proposing a utopian image of integration between living beings of different species.
Thus began her multi-year career as a coin designer for various international mints. During the Pandemic, Maria was commissioned by the Central Bank of Malta to design a 2 euro coin, dedicated to the difficult period the world is experiencing. For which she later produced a series of collector coins, including the successful gold and silver issue celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by Magellan and Elcano, the coin celebrating the birth of Louis Pasteur and the double gold and silver issue dedicated to the botanist Jhon Borg and a series of 2 euro coins for the preservation of the species.
Vatican City entrusts it with the production of a gold coin dedicated to Pope Gregory XV and the silver coin set dedicated to the allegory of backbiting, a theme very dear to the Pontiff.
In 2024, she began a collaboration with the Central Bank of Luxembourg, for which she produced a 2-euro coin for the 25th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri Guillaume’s accession to the throne.
Her creations combine classic lines with contemporary content and particular attention to detail, towards the search for images capable of arousing intense emotions and profound reflections on highly topical social issues.
