Biography
Gabriele Di Maulo was born in Milan in 1968.
After graduating from the Art Institute of Chiavari, he continued his studies by earning a degree in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara. In 1990, he was awarded a Scholarship from the Dr. Reismüller Foundation, which allowed him to attend Sculpture courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, under the guidance of Prof. Leo Kornbrust.
While attending the Academy of Carrara, he was chosen by sculptor Floriano Bodini to collaborate on the creation of the “Monumento ai Caduti sul Lavoro” (Monument to the Victims of Labor), dedicated to the victims of marble quarries.
Following this initial experience, he became Bodini’s assistant in his Milan studio, participating in significant monumental projects. Determined to pursue his own artistic path, he ended his collaboration with Bodini’s Studio after several years. During this time, he focused on a constant and tireless formal research that encompassed various applied arts, including sculpture, drawing, medal design, coin design, mosaic, and stained glass.
These experiments, along with his curiosity about different techniques, were crucial in shaping his distinctive and personal style, with themes ranging from the sacred to the profane.
In 1992, he won the Silver Medal in the sculpture competition held by the monthly magazine Arte of Mondadori. In 1993, at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, a jury consisting of Raffaele De Grada, Gian Alberto Dell’Acqua, and Mario De Micheli awarded him the Bronze Medal at the “Premio S. Carlo Borromeo” organized by the Lombardy Region—an official survey of the best young talents of the early ‘90s.
In the following years, he began an intense exhibition activity in both public and private galleries. In 2007, he was commissioned to create a monumental Stone Stations of the Cross for the Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo in Rovello Porro (CO), designed by Paolo Mezzanotte, the architect of the “Palazzo della Borsa” in Milan.
The preparatory drawings and sculptures of the Stations of the Cross were published in two separate books by the publishing house Ancora. In the same year, he met Ennio Morricone, with whom he developed a genuine friendship and mutual respect. During their numerous meetings, he initiated an interesting dialogue focused on the connections between music and sculpture. He is the author of the only sculptural portrait of the composer, created while Morricone was still alive.
In 2008, he was awarded the Gold Medal for artistic merit by the “Società Economica di Chiavari,” a cultural institution founded in 1791.
In March 2010, the sculptures of the Stone Stations of the Cross of Saltrio were included in the guided tours of Lombardy’s artistic heritage promoted by the FAI (Italian Environment Fund).
In 2016, he exhibited at the prestigious “Sala Veratti” in Varese, introducing one of the first virtual visits to an art exhibition through a 360° tour, utilizing the innovative “QR code” and a dedicated app. His work as a medalist and coin designer is also notable.
In 2019, he created the official medal for the “102nd International Lions Club Convention,” which took place in Milan.
In 2022, he designed the medal dedicated to the “100th anniversary of the election of Pius XI to the Papal throne,” now housed in the collection of the Vatican Medal Collection.
In 2023, he inaugurated a large-scale mosaic artwork dedicated to the theme of the Ascension for the Church of San Carlo Borromeo in Sesto San Giovanni, Milan.
He is currently also the official designer and sculptor for the Vatican City, creating exclusive coins highly valued by numismatic collectors worldwide and displayed in the Vatican Museums.
